Tropical beaches, hidden temples, local markets, and a thumping club scene. Phuket draws those who mellow in the sun and thrive at night. Further inland, Phuket Town’s eateries allow you to dip into chili and blue ginger-spiced dishes, and a stroll through the old quarter opens a window into the layers of its past. Despite its size and geography, there’s plenty of dining, accommodations, and adventure to satisfy luxury travellers and budget-conscious trip takers all year long.

Chalong Bay, largest town acts as a harbour for outgoing boats to Phi Phi island and others south islands. Phuket is blessed with more than 30 amazing beaches like Patong beach, Kata, Karon and Kamala beach. The main resort town of Patong has many nightclubs, bars and discos where youngsters are usually spotted in majority. The interior parts of this city are quite unexplored. They are very fertile hilly expanse that consists of mangrove forests, fishing villages, rubber and pineapple plantations. Overall, Phuket is stunning and has breathtaking views. It is surely a paradise for every beach bum. Offering the best tourist places in Phuket, it is a must visit for everyone.

Whether it’s a large biosphere reserve or a small village where community-based initiatives flourish, India has some splendid eco-friendly destinations. Here are some perfect places away from the urban jungles we all need an escape from every so often.

Khangchendzonga National Park, Sikkim

Khangchendzonga National Park, which covers almost 30% of the total land of Sikkim in northeast India, was initiated into the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2016. It provides one of the most breathtaking panoramas in the entire world. Along with the imposing Khangcheecndzonga, the third highest mountain in the world, there are spectacular glaciers, lakes, rivers, valleys, caves and plains.

Lahaul Spiti, Himachal Pradesh

Life can be hard in the cold mountain desert of Spiti Valley, where the craggy terrain and unforgiving climate (temperatures can dip to minus 30°C) provide very little means to sustain a livelihood. A few organisations such as Spiti Ecosphere are on a quest to preserve this vulnerable ecosystem by developing sustainable tourism in the region, which also helps in fuelling the local economy.

Thenmala, Kerala

Thenmala, which means Honey Mountain, holds pride of place as the first planned eco-tourism destination in India. It is surrounded by dense evergreen forests, rich in timber and a thriving rubber plantation. The beautiful green hills of Thenmala, nestled in the midst of the Western Ghats, holds many surprises for the traveller. The biodiversity of the region is evident at Butterfly Safari Park, the Deer Rehabilitation Centre and Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary. For the adventurous soul, Thenmala has activities such as biking, rock climbing, hiking, abseiling and camping. On the other hand, the sprawling tea plantations at the nearby Ambanad Hills are ideal for a relaxing stopover.

Mawlynnong Village, Meghalaya

Best known as the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong leads by example. The use of plastic has been banned here and so has smoking. Keeping the spirit of eco-friendliness alive, the streets are lined with bamboo dustbins and, unlike in most parts of India, there’s hardly every any litter to be found. What’s more, many of the guest houses are constructed of bamboo. Composting and nourishing tree plantations are also common practice in the village. The Living Roots Bridge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-see structure, is at the neighbouring Riwai Village, which is a short hike from Mawlynnong. The Khasi tribes of Meghalaya created these natural bridges by weaving together the roots of ficus trees.

Uttarakhand, also known as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to numerous temples and welcomes devotees all year round. Among the countless religious sites and circuits that devotees visit in Uttarakhand, one of the most prominent is the Char Dham Yatra. This Yatra or pilgrimage is a tour of four holy sites - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – nestled high up in the Himalayas. In Hindi, 'char' means four and 'dham' refers to religious destinations.

The high-altitude shrines remain shut for around six months every year, opening in summers (April or May) and closing with the onset of winter (October or November). It is believed that one should complete the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds towards Gangotri, onto Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. The journey can be completed by road or by air (helicopter services are available). Some devotees even do a Do Dham Yatra or a pilgrimage to two shrines - Kedarnath and Badrinath.

The Yamunotri temple, lodged in a narrow gorge close to the source of River Yamuna (the second-most sacred Indian river after River Ganga) in Uttarkashi district, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The district of Uttarkashi is also home to Gangotri dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the most sacred of all Indian rivers. Located in the Rudraprayag district lies Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badrinath, home to the sacred Badrinarayan Temple, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Char Dham Yatra is as divine as it is arduous but fulfills the soul!

The Munich Oktoberfest (Munich Beerfest) is one of the most famous events and the world's largest fair. This years Oktoberfest will be no exception. With some six million people attending every year, it is an important part of Bavarian culture.

A raucous celebration of Bavarian culture, Munich's Oktoberfest is one of the world's oldest, biggest, and longest parties. Dating back to 1810, the event these days kicks off when the mayor taps the first keg at noon on the third Saturday of September. Some 6 million revelers spend the ensuing 16 days clinking and drinking 1-liter beer steins, eating sausages and doughy pretzels, and swooshing through the air aboard carnival rides. Technically a folk festival rather than a beer festival, Oktoberfest features plenty of merrymakers in traditional lederhosen and dirndl dresses belting out old Bavarian songs in giant tents and beer gardens. Regardless of attire, though, anyone is welcome to link arms and join the fun.

Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changgu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim district of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 40 kilometers from Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,753 m (12,313 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season.

The lake surface reflects different colors with changes of seasons and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks prognosticated after studying the changing colors of the lake.   The lake is surrounded by steep mountains which are covered with snow during winter. During summer the snow cover melts and forms the source for the lake.

Tsomgo Lake is related to many myths and stories. The Sikkimese regard the lake as holy. In ancient times, Buddhists would study the colour of the lake ‘s water to predict the future. The lake is also of huge importance to the Jhakris (faith healers) of Sikkim. They gather here on Guru Purnima every year to offer their prayers.

Beautiful Hoi An is the most atmospheric city in Vietnam, with bags of surviving historic architecture. The old town quarter is a joy to explore, packed to the brim with well-preserved merchant houses that hark back to Hoi An's trading center heyday of the 15th century, when the town was a major meeting point for Japanese and Chinese merchants who flocked here for the local silks.

Plenty of the old merchant houses have been opened to the public, so you can get a taste of these times. The best is 17th-century Tan Ky House, with fascinating architectural and decorative elements. Hoi An's major symbol is the delightful Japanese Bridge at the western end of Tran Phu Street, while nearby, the Assembly Hall of the Fujian Chinese Congregation is the old town's most highly decorated temple.

There are numerous small pagodas and museums dotted about town, but Hoi An's true charm is found in simply rambling the old town streets admiring the well-preserved facades.

International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated every year on 18 May. This day is observed to highlight the importance of museums in any culture. According to the official website of International Council of Museums (ICOM), "Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples."

There was a time, in the seemingly endless lockdowns of last year (and the year before that), where it seemed like IRL culture had just stopped. The idea of a brand-new gallery popping up didn’t just seem unlikely, it felt impossible. But the worlds of art and heritage didn’t actually cease to exist. Across the globe, artists continued to create strange, groundbreaking works. Galleries battled through. And now 2022 is here (and the virus appears to be fading), a whole host of new museums (new!) are opening their doors for the very first time. Here are  the most exciting museum openings of the year.

1. Istanbul Museum of Modern Art

The Istanbul Museum of Modern Art was an icon of the Karakoy waterfront, before it was relocated temporarily to build a new state-of-the-art complex, designed by legendary architect Renzo Piano. The return of the Modern is set to enliven a seaside stretch that has also seen the recent opening of Galataport, a multipurpose development with a long pedestrian promenade along the Bosphorus, as well as a bevy of shops and restaurants. The space will also hold a library, cinema, design store and several event spaces.

2. Grand Egypt Museum, Giza

When it finally opens in November 2022, the Grand Egypt Museum will be the biggest museum in the world dedicated to a single civilisation. It’s located in Giza, within snooping distance of the great pyramids and a 40-minute drive from the capital, Cairo. The museum’s rotating display will comprise 50,000 artefacts, but most importantly, this will be the first time that all 5,000 pieces of King Tutankhamun’s treasure will be displayed in the same place since its discovery – death mask included.

3. Maison Gainsbourg, Paris

The Parisian townhouse where the feted (and more than occasionally controversial) French singer Serge Gainsbourg has been closed off to the public since his death in 1991. This spring, though, it’ll finally open as a museum dedicated to his life and work. The project has been led by his daughter – the actor and singer Charlotte – and the main attraction will surely be Serge’s famously eccentric living area, with its piano, art deco bar and huge collection of sculptures.

4. Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney

The expansion of the Art Gallery of New South Wales has cost a cool A$247 million (£130 million or $177 million). That’s a lot of cash. But the renovation is properly stunning. Visitors enter via a vast glass façade, which hangs above a pair of decommissioned Second World War oil tanks. Collections by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists are given precedence in the new gallery spaces, and green roofs, rainwater harvesting and solar panels also make it one of Australia’s most sustainable buildings.

A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Pashupatinath temple is one must-visit place in Kathmandu valley. For some, it is a pilgrimage while for others it is a fantastic heritage monument to discover.

Pashupatinath literally means “Lord of the animals“. This name was given to Lord Shiva following a legend around this very temple. There are several versions of it but I will stick to the one that our guide at Pashupatinath mentioned. It is said that Lord Shiva had taken the form of a deer and was caught later by the Gods. Though he returned back with the other Gods, he left with reluctance and an announcement that he be known as the “Lord of animals”. After he left, a Shiva Linga was found in this very place that he had made home and this forms the center of the Pashupatinath temple today. Belief has it that whoever glimpses this linga will never be born again as an animal. This is possibly one of the reasons why they say that even after you have worshiped Lord Shiva at the 12 sacred Jyotirlinga temples in India, your pilgrimage is not complete till you have visited the Pashupatinath temple in Kathmandu.

At the same time the Mother gave Auroville its 4-point Charter.

Planned by Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, Jaipur holds the distinction of being the first planned city of India. Renowned globally for its coloured gems, the capital city of Rajasthan combines the allure of its ancient history with all the advantages of a metropolis. The bustling modern city is one of the three corners of the golden triangle that includes Delhi, Agra and Jaipur.

The story goes that in 1876, the Prince of Wales visited India on a tour. Since the colour pink was symbolic of hospitality, Maharaja Ram Singh of Jaipur painted the entire city pink. The pink that colours the city makes for a marvellous spectacle to behold. Jaipur rises up majestically against the backdrop of the forts Nahargarh, Jaigarh and Garh Ganesh Temple.

Jaipur traces back its origins to 1727 when it was established by Jai Singh II, the Raja of Amber. He shifted his capital from Amber to the new city because of the rapidly-growing population and an increasing water scarcity. Noted architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya used the established principles of Vastu Shastra to build the city.

Explore the undiscovered side of the Thar Desert. The villas are specifically designed and conceptualised around a local flower and hence the name. The interiors include well commissioned botanical art. The colours used in the textiles and room accessories are simply magical and unwinding. One can soak into the wilderness and the beautifully mesmerizing sunset in the desert.
