One of the things that make Gangtok such an alluring holiday spot is its geography. It is located in the lower Himalayas at a height of 1,650 m making it a cool destination. It lies on one side of a hill with a promendade named The Ridge which houses the governor’s residence (Raj Bhawan) at one end and a palace at the other. On the east and west, Gangtok has two streams, Roro Chu and Ranikhola, respectively which divide the drainage into eastern and western portions.  These streams eventually join the Teesta at Singtam. Gangtok, much like other hilly regions like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, has extremely steep roads with houses built on compacted ground along them.

Barot lies between Kangra valley at one side and Kullu on the other. There are various area lies in different parts of the other districts. The valley was well not connected to the rest of the country until 1975 when the road was constructed and opened. This place actually came into existence back in the 1920s as a part of the Shanan Hydel Project. The Britishers constructed the reservoir that used to run from Joginder Nagar to Barot using the trolley system in mid-1925. Also, the trolley track set by them inclined at 45 degree from the steepest section which ends at Zero Point in Barot. The steepest gradient is known as 'Khooni Ghati'. Barot is a base route for many treks but is still unexplored as many people are not aware of this.

Kedarkantha is a mountain peak of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, India. Its elevation is 12,500 ft. Kedarkantha is located within Govind Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarkashi district. A trek to the peak of Kedarkantha usually starts from Sankri, a small village, and takes four days to complete.


Kedarkantha is such a popular winter trek that it would be apt to entitle it as the Queen of Winter Treks. Knee-deep snow in winters, mesmerizing view from the top, and the beautiful and easy trails make it popular among trekkers. The ‘easy on endurance’ trail goes through the thick pine forests of Govind National Park. The views from the top are worth climbing to an altitude of 12,500 ft.
