After a low-key celebration of the much-anticipated festival of Onam for two years straight due to the pandemic, Kerala Tourism is all set to bring back the vibrant festivities of Onam to the streets of the Southern State. Onam is an annual Malayali harvest festival and is also the official state festival of Kerala. It is synonymous with boat races, cultural programs, sports competitions, dance events, martial arts, floral Rangoli – pookkalam, and the all-time favourite Onam sadhya (a scrumptious plate full of traditional South Indian delicacies) in the minds of all Keralites.

Here are a few of the top locations in Kerala to celebrate Onam.

Trivandrum

One of the towns in Kerala where a grand celebration of Onam is held is Trivandrum. The entire city is brilliantly lit and decorated for the festival. You can walk around this region at night and be amazed by the lights that dazzle the streets, trees, and buildings.

Palakkad

Onam is a wonderful time to travel to Ernakulam. The well-known Athachamayam Festival is celebrated in the Thrippunithura district, which is close to Ernakulam. This celebration includes a street parade, musicians, and numerous traditional works of art from Kerala.

This time of year is filled with practically endless colourful variations of traditions and dances. To name a few, however, many people buy new clothes for the holidays, and countless lamps are lit at this time, just like during Diwali.

Nha Trang is a stunning beach city surrounded by mountains and ocean. Cai River and Cua Be River divide Nha Trang into three parts with 19 islands in total. There are so many things to discover in this incredible city. Out of all the places in Vietnam, it gets the most sunshine – over 300 days per year. It also has the shortest rainy season (from September to December). So it’s perfect for a beachy break.

The bay the city is in is dotted with 19 islands and islets, making it ideal for an island-hopping holiday. Once you’ve enjoyed the many activities the city and its beaches offer, head out to one (or more) of the adjacent islands. The marine life around Nha Trang is among the country’s most bio-diverse − great for diving and snorkelling.

Many companies offer one-day island-hopping tours, which often include transfers, food, entertainment and activities. For example, your tour may start with a visit to the National Oceanographic Museum of Vietnam. Then you’ll sail to the islands for snorkelling, swimming, and other water sports. Local guides may offer onboard entertainment. There are ‘booze cruises’, for those wanting to ‘chillax’ with a cocktail in hand. And some boats have glass bottoms, so you can admire the marine life as you traverse Nha Trang’s clear waters.

Alternatively, take your time to enjoy individual islands more fully, by staying overnight. With so many to choose from, which islands are best? Below is a guide to some of the most popular among them.

If your search for an earthly paradise has been less than fruitful, try following history’s Phoenician, Greek and Roman galleys, Arab dhows and even Chinese junks to the palm-fringed bays of this thin coastal stretch of tropical greenery on the Indian Ocean.

Trivandrum is the capital of the Indian state of Kerala, meaning “land of coconuts” in the region’s Malayalam language. No name could be more fitting. Jammed between the sea and coastal mountains, Kerala is subject to the monsoon rains that flood the land and the rice paddies on the subcontinent’s southern tip. Long growing seasons yield a coconut crop every 40 days, with each tree producing 20 to 30 coconuts per harvest. Natives of Kerala, most of whom seem to have at least four or five trees on their small plots of land, claim they are “the trees of heaven.” They use the coconuts themselves for food, coco water and “heady toddy” for drinking; the leaves for mats and roofs, the oil for cooking and the fiber for a thriving rope industry.

Almost every country has its hidden garden, usually a beautiful but unknown region that takes a back seat to more publicized and popular places. Kerala is India’s hidden garden. Coconut trees are not idle bystanders to Kerala's landscape or its hard-working people. Even a few trees on a small farmer's or laborer's house site can yield nutritious coconut meat, a rich cooking oil, sap to produce the mildly alcoholic and mineral-rich "toddy" to drink or sell, husks for the coir fiber industry, and leaves for roof thatching for the poor. In addition, most of Kerala's Hindu families still burn coconut oil in their vilaku, or religious lamps. People of all faiths thrill to stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics as gaudily clad Kathakali dancers twirl and gesture to rhythmic drum beats behind the flickering light of a large coconut oil lamp. When one considers all the benefits of the coconut tree, there is little wonder that Kerala has been called the land of coconuts.

The Bhangarh Fort is located on the border of the Sariska Reserve in the Aravali range of hills in Alwar district of Rajasthan. The nearest village is Gola ka Baas. The fort is situated at the foot of the hills on sloping terrain. The ruins of the king's palace are located on the lower slope of the hills; trees surround the pond area and a natural stream falls into the pond within the premises of the palace.

Although it is hard to judge paranormal activities, when the government tells you to stay away from certain places, then there is something that’s not right. Bhangarh Fort is one such place, where you will even get to see signboards, warning you to not remain there after sunset. The history of the fort dates back to the 17th century, and is surely not a place for those with faint hearts. Here are some scary facts about this fort that you should know if you are planning to visit the fort any time soon.

As per the legends, Bhangarh fort has been cursed by a hermit named Guru Balu Nath. The spot where the fort has been built once served as the meditation spot of the sage, and when the king pleaded with him that he wanted to build a fort here, the sage agreed on one condition that the fort’s shadow should not touch him. The king persuaded him that the fort’s shadow would not touch him at his place, which sadly did not happen, and the curse of the hermit followed, which led to the entire village being destroyed.
