Held every year on Edinburgh’s Calton Hill, the modern festival is a procession lead by the May Queen and her counterpart, the Green Man. The wild mix of drums, fire and physical theatre seen during Edinburgh’s Beltane Fire Festival is a spectacular sight to be seen and carries on into the early hours of the first day of May. Beltane – which roughly translates as “bright fire” – was a tradition celebrated in various forms across the British Isles as the starting point of summer. One of four seasonal festivals (along with Samhuinn, Imbolc and Lughnasadh), it was a chance for communities to come together to mark the changing of the seasons.

Lighting the Beltane fires on the first of May was a symbolic move to recall the growing power of the sun and cleanse the community of the dark months spent indoors. In Scotland, cattle were traditionally driven around these fires and the community would dance and leap over the flames. By the late nineteenth century, this practice had been almost abandoned. The fires of public Beltane celebrations in Edinburgh remained unlit until the modern festival was started in 1988 by a small group of enthusiasts, led by Angust Farguhar, then of the industrial music group, Test Dept, and with academic support from the School of Scottish Studies at the University of Edinburgh.

India will soon be home to the world's longest highway tunnel beneath the 16,580 ft high Shinku-La Pass, between Zanskar Valley in Ladakh and Lahaul Valley in Himachal Pradesh. As per the reports, the tunnel will be ready by 2025, and will provide all-weather connectivity between Ladakh and Himachal.

At this moment, the Atal Tunnel provides a safer alternative to the 13,000 ft high Rohtang Pass and is the world’s highest tunnel above 10,000 ft. The Nimmu-Padum-Darcha highway will be safer than the Manali-Leh and Srinagar-Leh highways as it does not pass near either the India-China or India-Pakistan borders. At present, people have to travel 101km from Manali to Darcha on Leh Road and then enter the Zanskar Valley through Shinku-La Pass.

Freedom Day on 27 April is an annual celebration of South Africa's first non-racial democratic elections of 1994. It is significant because it marks the end of over three hundred years of colonialism, segregation and white minority rule and the establishment of a new democratic government led by Nelson Mandela and a new state subject to a new constitution.  The holding of the first non racial elections was the culmination of years of struggle and a negotiated settlement which led to the unbanning of the liberation organisations, the release of political prisoners and the return of exiles and the formal all party negotiations which drafted an interim constitution.

The moment which changed the path of South African history came after long and tension-ridden negotiations held between 1991 and 1992. The South African government, the African National Congress (ANC), the South African Communist Party (SACP) and other liberation movements engaged in these talks. The 1994 election paved the way towards a new democratic dispensation and a new constitution for the country. The elections took place in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, though there were threats of political violence.

Muslims across the globe are always united in one activity whenever the fasting period is around – Ramadan.  You will find both young and old Muslims observing this season of holiness and spirituality.  After fasting for thirty days, the holy month ends with a period of celebration. As the first of the two canonical festivals of Islam, Eid ul-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan (the holy fasting season).

Eid ul-Fitr in Egypt is a time of private visits and hospitable receptions when friends visit one another, gifts are presented, and new clothes are worn. This season is always marked as a public holiday, as it is indeed a season to relish for Muslims. Eid ul-Fitr is one of the biggest celebrations in Egypt.  In fact, it is a three day holiday in Egypt. The word Eid (from the Arabic language) implies celebration, feast, and recurring joy but to Egyptians, this word rings more than just bells.  If you were to mention the word Eid to any Egyptian, he would respond with a sense of delight, reflecting a heart full of joy as if he were still a child.
