From a place where birds commit suicide to a fort where entry after sunset is forbidden, there is no shortage of mysterious places in India. With a rich culture, history, and millions of people who believe in the metaphysical and the paranormal, India is definitely a land of mystery.

About 200 years ago, Kuldhara was home to more than 1,500 Paliwal Brahmins, descendants of a community that had lived here for more than five centuries. However, one day, the entire population, which included residents of 85 villages, fled. Overnight.

According to folklore, the people of Kuldhara didn’t just leave the village as it is, but instead they left it with a curse, forbidding any future settlements. All that is left here today are few dilapidated buildings, an old temple, and rumours that try to explain the sudden evacuation. According to a popularly held notion, the village is now inhabited by ghosts. Once a home to rich Paliwal Brahmins, the "haunted" village was abandoned by its inhabitants because of atrocities committed by a powerful minister of Jaisalmer, Salim Singh.

The viewing point in Gujarat’s Nadabet is aimed at boosting border tourism in the state. It will have a ‘Beating Retreat’ ceremony; tourists can view weapons used by the Armed Forces like MiG-27 aircraft and surface-to-surface missiles. Gujarat gets its version of the Wagah — an Indo-Pakistan border viewing point in Nadabet, around 188 kilometres from Ahmedabad.

Located in the Rann of Kutch, this attraction is connected by a narrow bitumen road cutting across mudflats that get inundated during high tide. Civilians will be able to view the fenced international border with Pakistan at “Zero Point”, which is guarded 24X7 by the Border Security Force (BSF). There will be a “Beating Retreat” ceremony like the one held at the Wagah-Attari border. However, there’s a difference. Unlike the border in Punjab, there won’t be soldiers present on the Pakistani side in Nadabet. There are other attractions for tourists to look forward to. A 30-feet high T-Junction Pillar, adorned with murals depicting the border protectors in action, is the centrepiece of the Seema Darshan Complex. Other special attractions include a “Sarhad Gatha” exhibition centre and museum. A monument, titled “Ajay Prahari” has also been erected at the site in the memory of fallen soldiers.

With quaint villages and rolling vineyards, and cuisine that incorporates lavender into its oils, honey and delicious sorbets, Provence is perhaps the best place in the world to see fields upon fields of lavender.

Lavender season in Provence sadly isn't a year-round affair. The best time to see the plants in bloom is from the last week of June to the beginning of August. Peak bloom is around mid-July – although this may vary year to year depending on the rainfall. In Provence, lavender fields are often found next door to sunny sunflower fields which are also best to enjoy in July and August, so if you want the best of both worlds, that's when to go.

While September is no doubt a lovely time to visit the Provence region, with fewer crowds and cooler weather, all of the lavender will have been harvested. Even in late August, you may cut it fine, so if your plan is to avoid the most crowds, your best bet is to go in July before the schools break for the summer holidays. Like many things it's best to be flexible if possible – so if you're thinking of heading to France for the lavender season next year, try to give yourself a couple of weeks so you can be sure to witness the fields at the peak of their beauty.

The Maldives has long been the picture-perfect paradise getaway, and even more so during the pandemic. Last year saw tourism return to almost pre-pandemic levels with the arrival of 1.3 million travellers, compared to 1.7 million visitors in 2019. And now, the world’s lowest-lying nation might just have a stable solution to the stark reality of rising sea levels. The Maldives Floating City has just been green-lit for construction: 5,000 housing units that are linked together and tethered to the floor of a 500-acre lagoon, designed to preserve and enhance its natural and cultural ecosystem.

Located a 15-minute boat ride from Malé and the international airport, the project is based on an integrated tourism model, and will include hotels, houses, shops and restaurants. It will be a car-free zone, to be navigated via the canals and the natural white-sand roads on foot or on bicycles and electric, noise-free buggies and scooters.

International travellers also have the option of obtaining a residence permit with the purchase of a house. The first floating housing block, under construction by Bison, will be transported to the lagoon and opened for public viewing in August, to enable people to gauge the look and feel of the homes. The modular city construction is slated for January 2023 and will take about five years to complete.

The Maldives Floating City is a private-public partnership between Dutch Docklands and the island government. Dutch Docklands’ founders are architect Koen Olthuis and developer Paul van de Camp and the project relies on floating technology from the Netherlands, which has a centuries-old engagement in designing architecture to withstand floods.
